Summer Spending: What's Necessary?

Can you believe August is here and Fall is just around the corner?!

I don't know about you guys, but my Summer FLEW by. I love to have a schedule and I love to plan ahead for things so between planning from one weekend to the next, summer just went by way too fast. However, it was by far one of the most productive summers I've ever had! From family vacations, time with my friends, blogging adventures/content planning, to planning for going back to school, I got SO many things done and that's always a win in my book. If you are a teacher and have the summers "off," you can totally relate to what I am about to say. Having the summer off can lead to spending way too much UNNECESSARY money. Am I right or am I right? I know everyone can relate to this in some aspect but when you are a teacher and go from spending 8/9/10/11 hours at school every day to A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SCHEDULE, there is so much more opportunity to online shop and run to Target WAY more than necessary. I can't tell you how many times this summer that I have had an hour to two to spare and just decided to run to Target or TJ Maxx and bought things I totally did not need. It's fun, yes, but once that money is gone, it's gone... and that feeling isn't fun.

If you've been following me for a while,  you know that I try to keep the majority of what I post affordable or at least provide an alternative to an expensive item. Therefore, when I spend too much unnecessary money, I instantly regret it (as I'm sure we all do). When I decided to post this blog post, I shared a Q and A on Instagram asking you guys what you spent your money on this summer that was totally a waste of money and what you spent your money on that was totally worth it. Let's be honest.... sometimes a splurge or random purchase ends up being the best decision ever! While I try to keep things all things fashion and beauty, I'm going to branch out a little bit today and talk about some lifestyle related things. I'm going to share the things I purchased this summer that are total MUST HAVES and I'm going to talk about some items (not brand specific because I really don't like to talk negatively about specific items on here/don't want to offend anyone who's thoughts may be different) that I really could have gone without.

What were my unnecessary purchases? Makeup, skin care, makeup, and more makeup. I tried out SO many different makeup products this summer that I truly did not need and have not used more than once. Before trying out new makeup, I HIGHLY recommend thoroughly reading reviews and even going into the store and trying them out. Ulta is my favorite place to go for new makeup products because they actually test them out on you to see how you like them before making a purchase.

MUST HAVE Purchases that I Made:

1. Handheld Steamer- This was a TOTAL lifesaver during my summer travels. It does such an amazing job getting the wrinkles out of any fabric and only takes 2 minutes. Not to mention, it's only $19.99!

2. Fall Booties- A pair of good Fall booties are shoe closet staples! I typically splurge on one nice pair per year and these were a Nordstrom Anniversary Sale purchase that DID NOT disappoint! They are so comfortable and totally worth the money (under $100 during the sale). They are also true to size!

3. Sunglasses- I never regret buying a good pair of sunglasses. These are only $16 and are by far some of my favorites that I've ever owned! I got a pair of Dolce and Gabbana ones for my birthday and the style is super similar to these. They do not hurt your head and look good with everything!

4. Scout Tote- This is my favorite Summer tote because it's perfect to use as a beach bag and as a carry on! The material makes it super easy to clean so whether you get sand on it or makeup, it wipes right off. Plus, I love that you can carry this one on your shoulder!

5. Apple Watch- Yes, these are pricey but if there is one thing that's worth the money.. it's this watch! I had the Series 1 when it first came out but unfortunately it broke so I had to replace it. I got this Series 4 as a birthday gift and absolutely love it. I love buying different bands for it but the features that it comes with, you just cannot beat. 6. Scout Large Tote- BACK TO SCHOOL PLANNING 101. This bag is a lifesaver when it comes to packing things up to take to work or back to school! I can fit SO much in it and already have mine packed up and ready to move into my new classroom this year. Totally worth the money!

7. Yeti Coffee Mug- Any other coffee lovers out there?! My husband bought me this mug when we were at the beach earlier this summer and I absolutely love it! I have several Yeti cups but this one might be my favorite so far. Plus, it's pink 😍

8. Benefit Foundation- Thanks to Ulta, I made one correct makeup purchase this summer! That is this Benefit foundation that is SO lightweight but gives you total coverage. It's perfect for all day wear and does not come off at all (especially if you set it with powder). It truly is so light that you feel like you're only wearing tinted moisturizer. I wear Shade 4!

9. Dupe Tassel Earrings- These were my favorite find from July and one of my top sellers! They are the dupe version for everyone's favorite Calypso tassel earrings. They're only $15 and look identical to the original pair that are right at $50.

10. Pants for Work/Back to School- One thing I tried really hard to do was buy things this summer that I could wear when I went back to school. These are SO comfy and I just love the gingham print because you can style them so many ways. I also found a leopard pair from Old Navy that I have also linked! Both are true to size and do not stretch throughout the day.
